REHEARSALS

(Southern California carolers only - subject to change)

I expect to have about 11 Southern California rehearsals in 2023:

In August, I expect to have Three 2-hour Scaroling rehearsals:

(One choral-style and Two small-group Scaroling rehearsal.)

In September and early October,

I hope to have Three 3-hour Basic Rep rehearsals

I hope to have Two 90-minute Extended Rep Rehearsals

And Two small group rehearsals for Basic & Extended Rep

And in early November, I will have a Last Chance rehearsal that will be run like an audition (like last year) (because it is): your last chance to show me that you can sing the music. Many gigs will have already been offered to other singers by this point, so I strongly advise that you plan to attend at least one earlier small group rehearsal and only plan to attend the Last Chance rehearsal as a last resort.

And the $64,000 question - how many should you attend?

NEW SCAROLERS should plan to attend two or three Scaroling rehearsals, including at least one small group rehearsal.

RETURNING SCAROLERS should plan to attend one or two Scaroling rehearsals, including a small group rehearsal.

NEW CAROLERS - should plan to attend two or three Basic Rep rehearsals, plus one or two small group rehearsals

RETURNING CAROLERS: Plan to attend either a Basic Rep or an Extended Rep rehearsal, plus a small group rehearsal.

Even if you are a seasoned professional caroler, you will need to invest time practicing this music outside of rehearsal in order to be successful. To aid this, I will provide vocal reference recordings of every song.

I will try to make the rehearsals as centrally located as possible, but since LA is a big place, you should be prepared to drive up to an hour to attend each rehearsal.

I will gather your caroling rehearsal availability in late August, and I try to have a rehearsal schedule determined by the first week of September.

Some definitions:

SCAROLING/SCAROLER refers to an entirely different set of music that we sing for Halloween gigs, generally in October. There are about 50 songs in The Scaroling book; some of the music is exceptionally difficult. I usually only accept returning carolers into the Scaroling roster, but I might make an exception for candidates who have a lot of free time on their hands.

SMALL GROUP REHEARSAL means you will be singing in a small group instead of in a big one (since we perform in small groups, after all!). Sometimes one other person will be singing your part with you, but I plan to rotate singers around so everyone gets a chance to sing their part on their own.

BASIC REP refers to the 70 songs in the book that every caroler must be able to sing; this is all that first-year carolers are required to know.

EXTENDED REP refers to an additional 30 songs that all returning carolers are expected to know - it’s generally harder (but also more fun) than the Basic Rep.
